The Appenzeller Barthuhn is perfectly adapted to the Swiss climate. This hardy breed lays eggs prolifically even at low temperatures.

Their most distinctive feature is the beard that gives them their name, which is found in both sexes. In addition, a broad, deep-red rose comb with prominent beads adorns their head.

Despite their impressive adaptability and unique characteristics, there are now only a few Appenzeller Barthuhns left. This is because other hybrid breeds produce more eggs, and modern agriculture favours these.

For this reason, the Appenzeller Barthuhn is listed on the Red List of vulnerable livestock breeds. It is supported by ‘ProSpecieRara’, the Swiss Foundation for the Cultural, Historical and Genetic Diversity of Plants and Animals.
