Varanus macraei

The blue tree monitor has a long tail which it can coil up like a chameleon. The tail helps it to support itself and gives it extra grip amongst the branches.

Red List
Endangered

The blue tree monitor was first scientifically described as a species in 2001.

Monitor lizards are found in Africa, Asia and, above all, in Australia. They inhabit a wide variety of habitats, ranging from hot, humid rainforests to arid deserts. All monitor lizard species are diurnal. Monitor lizards are extremely agile and powerful reptiles. They have an efficient respiratory system and can take in large amounts of oxygen. This enables them to perform great physical feats such as jumping, swimming and climbing at high speed.
