Canara-Buntbarsch im Aquarium im Zoo Zürich

Canara pearlspot

Etroplus canarensis

The Canara pearlspot was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1992. However, the population is very small and therefore critically vulnerable.

Endangered

There are only three known species of cichlid in India. In Africa and the rest of Asia, they are much more diverse.

The Canara pearlspot was thought to be extinct. It was not until 1992 that it was rediscovered as part of a comprehensive species inventory project. However, the species appears to have dwindled to a very small population (genetic bottleneck) and therefore has low genetic diversity.

The Canara pearlspot is usually golden-yellow to beige in colour, with dark grey to grey-brown vertical stripes. Depending on the time of day, the stripes and the golden colour pattern appear slightly different, sometimes paler or more vivid.
