The exact number of crested quail doves in the wild is unknown. However, it is believed that their population is in decline. This is primarily due to the loss of their habitat as a result of the expansion of agricultural land.

Most species of pigeon have grey, bluish or brown plumage. Very few species are truly colourful. The Crested quail dove is one of the more colourful species of pigeon.
