Exuma Island Iguana

Cyclura cychlura figginsi

The rise in tourism poses threats to the Exuma Island Iguana, as it can disturb the animals and damage their habitats.

CR

Red List
Critically Endangered

The Exuma Island Iguana is a subspecies of the Northern Bahaman rock iguana. It is found only on the Exuma archipelago in the Bahamas. Eight subpopulations of this subspecies are currently known.

Probably the greatest threats to the Exuma Island Iguana are the high volume of tourism and the fact that it is driving the lizard further and further back. In 2004, a fire – probably caused by a tourist’s cigarette – destroyed large parts of the iguanas’ habitat. The illegal wildlife trade is another threat.

In the case of the Exuma Island Iguana, the males are usually larger than the females.
