Hildebrands Titanenwurz im Masoala Regenwald des Zoo Zürich

Hildebrandt's amorphophallus

Amorphophallus hildebrandtii

Hildebrandt's amorphophallus is a tuberous plant that only develops a stem with leaves and a flower spike for a short period of time. This means that even at Zoo Zurich, the plant is not always on display!

Hildebrandt's amorphophallus has a distribution in the seasonally dry, deciduous forests of western Madagascar.

The flower consists of a stalk over a metre long. The colour of the stalk ranges from off-white to a dull violet. The size of the plant and the colour of the flower stalk can vary considerably depending on the plant’s age and location.
