Hortensoienbaum im Masoala Regenwald des Zoo Zürich

Tropical hydrangea

Dombeya wallichii

The tropical hydrangea is native to Madagascar and is related to the cocoa tree.

The tropical hydrangea grows to a maximum height of eight metres. The inflorescences, which hang from long stems, remain on the tree for a long time even after they have dried out. They are reminiscent of the hydrangea cultivated here as a pot plant.
