CR

Red List
Critically Endangered

Lothara's gecko is found exclusively in Madagascar, in the Montagne des Français mountain range. It lives there in the limestone mountains and depends on forests for its survival. This nocturnal gecko often climbs trees to a height of up to two metres.

Due to ongoing deforestation and the resulting loss of habitat, the survival of Lothara's gecko is under threat. The area has now been designated a protected site, meaning the species is under less pressure. Nevertheless, the geckos remain vulnerable due to their small range.

The juveniles, in particular, stand out because of their distinctive, colourful plumage. Their tails are a bright orange and their backs are striped in black and white. As they reach adulthood, however, this striking colouring gradually fades.
