Rosy-billed pochard

Netta peposaca

Unlike many other ducks, the drake of the rosy-billed pochard does not shed its breeding plumage, but retains it all year round.

LC

Red List
Least Concern

The drake of the rosy-billed pochard is easily recognised by the carmine-red bump on its beak. Furthermore, he wears his breeding plumage all year round, unlike many other male ducks, which have only plain-coloured plumage outside the breeding season.

Because of their impressive size and tasty meat, these waterbirds are heavily hunted. Despite hunting and the drainage of wetlands, however, they are not yet facing any threats. Thanks to their adaptability, they are able to colonise agricultural water retention basins and thus establish themselves in a new habitat.
