Red List
Endangered

The Sambirano cichlid is therefore found only in a small range, covering an area of approximately 3,500 km².

Its name is derived from the Sambirano River, where it lives. It is also found in the crater lakes on the island of Nosy Be, which has earned it the alternative name ‘Nosy Be cichlid’.

The greatest threats to this species are, in particular, overfishing and the loss of its habitat. The populations in the crater lakes are less at risk from these threats.
