Varatraza panchax

Pachypanchax varatraza

The Varatraza panchax (Pachypanchax varatraza) is endemic to Madagascar and is found in the north-east of the island. Its Malagasy name, ‘Varatraza’, means ‘east wind’.

Red List
Endangered

The Varatraza panchax comes in green and red colour forms, although these are only visible in the males. The scales of the green males display rusty to chestnut-brown corners on the rear half of their bodies. However, the size and intensity of these vary depending on the population.

The markings on the females are less distinct than those on the males.

Zoo Zurich plans to continuously expand its programme for the husbandry and breeding of endangered Madagascan species. The aim is to expand the husbandry network and thereby enhance the ex situ conservation of these species – that is, the establishment of reserve populations in human care.
