Vietnamese pond turtle

Mauremys annamensis

Vietnamese pond turtles reproduce relatively slowly. This is why careful planning and a great deal of time are needed to save the species from extinction.

Breeding programme

The Vietnamese pond turtle is a critically endangered species. Agriculture and urbanisation have severely reduced its natural habitat in Vietnam. Furthermore, these turtles are sought after for their meat and for use in traditional medicine, which has contributed to a drastic decline in their population.

As the Vietnamese pond turtle has a slow reproduction rate compared with other species, it will take a very long time for the population to recover. Effective conservation measures and sound captive breeding programmes will be crucial to the survival of this species.
