Wasserrebe im Masoala Regenwald des Zoo Zürich

Water vine

Leea guineensis

The water vine is easy to spot thanks to its scarlet inflorescences and red-blue berries. Ripe berries, like grapes, are very watery.

This small shrub or tree, which grows to a height of two to ten meters, is found in the understory of moist rainforests, as well as in deciduous dry forests in Madagascar, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
