Rotstirn-Blatthühnchen (Jacana jacana) im Masoala Regenwald des Zoo Zürich

Wattled jacana

Jacana jacana

The wattled jacana can walk on water – or at least almost.

LC

Red List
Least Concern

Wattled jacanas have very long toes. Thanks to these, they can walk across floating aquatic plants. The long toes distribute their weight over a large area, so that the birds do not sink through.

Wading birds such as wattled jacanas are precocial. They leave their nest immediately after hatching and straight away follow their parents as they forage.
