Three questions for Joseph
What motivates you to work for the Lewa Conservation Project?
As deputy head of the anti-poaching unit, I am motivated by seeing wildlife move freely within the conservancy, protected areas and community lands without the threat of poaching.
What has been an unforgettable moment in your project?
In the fight against poaching and other crimes that threaten wildlife in this landscape, our four-legged friends—the detection dogs—play a vital role. They not only track down poachers, but also find missing community members while helping protect their livestock, which is something truly special. On one occasion, our dogs tracked down an elderly man from a neighbouring community who had become lost in the forest. With their help, we were able to find him and reunite him with his family.
What is your greatest wish for your project?
A peaceful ecosystem where wildlife and communities thrive together, free from the threat of poaching. I also wish for well-equipped teams that can respond to wildlife crime and human–wildlife conflict in our neighbouring communities.
«What I value most is seeing people and animals live safely side by side.»
