Breeding programme

Impalas are usually seen near water or in sparse woodland. This is where they find cover when danger threatens.

If a herd feels threatened by threats, the animals scatter explosively in all directions. They can cover up to 10 metres in a single leap. With such leaping power, an Impala can easily leap over another member of the herd, making it difficult for its predators to catch it.

Adult males engage in territorial battles. Using their long, pointed horns, they lock horns with one another and can inflict serious injuries on their opponent in the process. The victor defends his territory and mates with the passing females.

The battles are fierce, and defending their territories takes a heavy toll on the bucks, leaving them with hardly any time to feed and causing them to lose strength rapidly. Often, a male can only hold onto his territory for a few days.
