Robots are no longer just rigid machines. In research, so-called “soft robots” made of flexible materials are becoming increasingly common. They are safe to use around people, are ideal for handling delicate goods, and can move in environments that are inaccessible to conventional robots.
A Special Role Model: The Elephant
A research project at the University of Freiburg is developing a soft, walking robot modeled after large mammals. Elephants are particularly well-suited for this purpose, as they are masters at carrying heavy loads.
One major challenge is changing direction efficiently while walking. To understand this, the research team is collecting motion data from elephants and incorporating it into the robot's design.
