Breeding programmes

We participate in the ex situ programs of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) with various animal species.

The goal of the breeding programs is to establish healthy, self-sustaining zoo populations with the greatest possible genetic diversity. As reserve populations, they provide animals for reintroductions when needed.

Each breeding registry has a coordinator. This person maintains an overview of the total European zoo population of the relevant species and coordinates among the individual zoos.

Studbooks coordinated by Zoo Zurich

We currently maintain the studbooks for these species. We also maintain the studbooks for the hyacinth macaw and the red-tailed amazon.

And we participate in the respective breeding programs with the following species.
